simple hit counter

PART 2: The Silent Exit

PART 5: The Final Resolution

When Chris finally walked through our front door two hours later, he was pale, exhausted, and visibly angry.

“How could you embarrass my family like that?” he demanded, throwing his keys onto the counter. “My brother had to drain his emergency savings, and my sister was practically in tears!”

I sat back on the couch, entirely calm. “Chris, for two years I paid thousands of dollars for people who publicly mocked me as a ‘walking credit card.’ You told me it was ‘easier this way.’ Tonight, it was easier for me.”

He opened his mouth to argue, but realized he had zero ground to stand on.

From that weekend forward, the family dinners stopped being held at five-star steak houses. And whenever we did join them for a meal, separate checks were requested before the drinks even hit the table—and nobody ever made a joke about my wallet again.
