Throughout the meal, Chris’s brother ordered two prime dry-aged ribeyes just to take one home, while his sister called over the sommelier to request their most exclusive vintage.
“Order whatever you want!” my sister-in-law announced to the table, winking in my direction. “We have to celebrate Dad in style!”
I smiled warmly, nodded, and ordered a simple side salad and a glass of sparkling water.
Halfway through the main course, while everyone was buried in their ribeyes and seafood platters, I quietly leaned over to Chris and whispered that I needed to step into the restroom.
Instead of walking toward the back, I walked straight to the front host stand. I pulled out my purse, handed the manager my credit card, and said, “I’d like to pay for my salad and water right now. Separate the rest of the bill, please.”
The manager happily processed my individual check, handed me my receipt, and wished me a pleasant evening.
