Daniel pulled out a chair for me at the lowered island and placed a warm cup of tea in front of my hands.

“After the complications during your surgery,” Daniel explained, “the lead surgeon pulled me into a private conference room. He told me that your nerve recovery would require six to eight months of intensive home rehabilitation, and that our two-story layout would leave you completely trapped upstairs.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why keep it secret while I was in that hospital room feeling abandoned?”

“Because every time I visited you during those first forty-eight hours, your blood pressure spiked from severe anxiety,” Daniel said, his eyes glistening with tears. “The doctor warned me that emotional stress could trigger secondary surgical bleeding. If you knew how much our lives were about to change, you would have panicked instead of healing.”

So while I was sitting in my hospital bed imagining the worst, Daniel had been working twenty-hour days.

He had packed our upper-floor furniture into storage, hired contractors to install non-slip flooring and ramps, converted the ground floor into an accessible recovery suite, and secured top-tier private physical therapy equipment.
