PART 2: The Lost Identity

Samuel lowered the silver locket into my trembling palms.

Inside was a faded photograph of a young woman holding a newborn baby—and standing right beside her was a younger version of Samuel, wearing a sharp suit and a brilliant smile.

“That’s not just a photograph, Marcus,” Samuel said, his voice choking with emotion. “That was taken thirty years ago in Chicago.”

My head began to spin as I stared at the man in the photo, then back at the sleek SUV parked by the curb.

“I don’t understand,” I stammered. “You lived in a makeshift shack behind our rental house for two decades. You wore tattered coats and ate out of plastic containers.”

“I lived like that because it was the only way your mother could keep you safe,” Samuel explained, stepping closer. “I am not a stranger she took pity on. I am your biological father.”

My knees nearly gave out beneath me. The years of resentment, the cold winter nights, the taped-up sneakers—all of it crashed down on me in an instant.
