PART 2: The Transformed House

The house was entirely unrecognizable.

Every piece of furniture from our twenty years together—our cozy armchairs, the dining table where we hosted family holidays, even the photos on the walls—had been cleared out. In their place were specialized medical supplies, mobility ramps, an adjustable electric hospital bed in the living room, and a state-of-the-art rehabilitation station.

Sitting at the newly lowered kitchen island, surrounded by blueprints, medical equipment manuals, and stacks of financial documents, was Daniel.

He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and a worn tape measure resting around his neck.

“Evelyn,” he breathed, standing up so quickly his chair scraped against the tile. “You’re home.”

Tears pricked my eyes, but confusion and hurt still tightened my chest. “Daniel… what is all this? Where are our things? Why didn’t you visit me even once?”

Daniel walked over slowly, taking my hands in his with the same tender grip he had offered before my surgery.

“Because the surgeon told me what you were facing after the complications,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “And I knew I only had fourteen days to rebuild our entire life.”
