PART 2: The Lost Identity

PART 3: The Price of Protection

Samuel guided me to the front porch steps of my mother’s small house, sitting beside me as the cool breeze stirred the autumn leaves.

“Thirty years ago, I was an executive at a regional bank,” Samuel began, his eyes fixed on the silver locket. “I uncovered a massive laundering scheme involving dangerous organized crime figures linked to state officials. When I tried to go to federal authorities, they came after my family.”

My mother had fled in the middle of the night with me in her arms, changing her name and hiding in this small town to protect my life.

“The syndicate spent years looking for us,” Samuel continued. “The only way to ensure they wouldn’t trace her to me was to make sure I had no legal existence, no paper trail, no bank accounts, and no assets.”

“So you gave up your life…” I whispered, tears filling my eyes.

“I gave up my identity so I could watch you grow up from fifty feet away,” Samuel said softly. “Your mother insisted on bringing me meals every day because it was the only way we could see each other, touch hands for a second, and make sure we were all still surviving.”
