“Why did she beg you to stay silent before she died?” I asked, wiping my face.

“Because the syndicate’s key figures were only formally convicted and sentenced three weeks ago,” Samuel revealed, pulling a thick envelope of legal clearance papers from his coat pocket. “Until that trial closed, speaking the truth would have put a target on your back.”

She had carried the burden of my anger and resentment for twenty years, letting me believe she cared more about a homeless stranger than her own child, just to keep me completely innocent of the danger surrounding us.

“She made me promise not to tell you until it was completely safe,” Samuel said, holding out his hand to me. “She wanted me to hand you the locket myself when the storm was finally over.”

I looked at the silver locket, then at the man who had slept in a cold wooden shelter behind our house for two decades just to guard his family from the shadows.
