PART 4: The Rejection

“Our father didn’t just raise us alone,” Lily said, tears finally glistening in her eyes as she pointed toward where I was standing. “He spent eighteen years protecting us from the truth so we wouldn’t grow up carrying hatred in our hearts. He took the blame, he took the struggle, and he gave us everything.”

She refolded the paper and placed it back in her pocket, looking directly toward Clarissa’s voice in the front row.

“So to the woman standing there in the designer dress: keep your money. You didn’t give us light, you didn’t give us love, and you don’t get to claim our success today. The only parent in this room is the man who stayed.”

The auditorium erupted into a thunderous standing ovation. Parents stood up, clapping and shouting, while security guards quietly moved toward the front row as the disruption grew.

Overwhelmed by her public exposure, Clarissa turned around, ducked her head beneath her wide-brimmed hat, and practically sprinted out the side exit of the building, never looking back.
