PART 3: A FATHER’S HIDDEN JOURNEY
The woman, whose name was Eleanor, sat across from me at her kitchen table, tears welling in her eyes as she held the letter close.
“Zane didn’t leave you for another woman, my dear,” Eleanor said softly, seeing the unspoken fear written across my face.
“He was my brother—and thirty years ago, before you two were married, he made a decision that broke his heart.”
Eleanor revealed that Zane had legally adopted her young son after her husband passed away, stepping in to pay for his medical treatments during a life-threatening illness.
Because of a bitter family dispute at the time, Zane agreed to keep his fatherly role completely secret so Eleanor’s late husband’s estate wouldn’t cut off support.
