My husband, Zane, and I were married for thirty-four years.
He wasn’t only my husband—he was my best friend. We built our life side by side, celebrated every milestone together, and carried each other through every hardship. After thirty-four years of marriage, I honestly believed there wasn’t a single secret left between us.
Then, a few months ago, everything changed. Zane was diagnosed with aggressive cancer, and from that day forward, the hospital became his second home.
The doctors did everything they could, and I spent nearly every day beside his bed, refusing to believe our story could end this way. I knew his condition was serious, but I kept telling myself we would somehow get through it.
Looking back now, I realize Zane must have known something I refused to accept. Two days before he passed away, while we were alone in his hospital room, he reached into the bedside drawer.
He pulled out a sealed envelope bearing a woman’s name I had never seen before and placed it in my hands. He looked at me and quietly said, “If something happens to me… promise you’ll deliver this to her yourself. And whatever you do, don’t open it.”
I wanted to ask who she was. I wanted to know why this letter mattered so much. But I couldn’t deny him one of his final wishes.
In the blur of funeral arrangements and endless condolences, I nearly forgot about the envelope. Then, two days after the funeral, I found it inside my bedside drawer.
The next morning, I drove nearly three hours to the address written on the back. When the woman opened the door and I said my husband’s name, all the color drained from her face.
She accepted the envelope with trembling hands and opened it immediately. She read only the first line.
Then she looked at me, panic filling her eyes, and whispered, “Did Zane tell you everything?”
