THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE

My parents were both fifty-three when I was born. They joked that while other children had young parents, mine had enough life experience to answer every question I would ever ask.

Dad looked happier than he had since Mom died, and I wanted to believe he had found love again. But something about Emily felt… off.

She seemed too good to be true.

Then one night, I went downstairs for water and heard her whispering on the phone behind the closed living room door.

“He has no idea. Neither does she. I’ve been planning THIS for years… getting close to that family was never an accident.”

I froze.

Then she said one more sentence. I covered my mouth to stop myself from screaming.
