I pulled down the heavy attic ladder while Emily was out running errands, searching through dusty boxes of my mother’s old teaching records.
Deep inside a steel lockbox, I found a yellowed newspaper clipping from thirty years ago detailing a tragic hit-and-run investigation.
My mother, a high school principal at the time, had reported a corrupt driver who was illegally passing school buses—a driver who turned out to be Emily’s father.
