“Uncle Elias worked three jobs to pay for our braces, our clothes, and every single meal we ever ate,” Camille said, her voice trembling with emotion.
“He gave up his own youth, his own chance at marriage, and his own dreams so that the three of us could stand on this stage today.”
The entire audience went completely quiet as Zora stepped up to take her turn at the microphone, looking straight into my eyes.
“For four years, the three of us worked extra shifts and saved every dollar from our academic scholarships,” Zora revealed through rising tears.
“We bought back the mortgage on his hardware store and paid off his home in full so he never has to work another hard day in his life.”
The university dean walked out to the podium holding three legal name-change documents, smiling warmly down at me in the audience.
