THE PERFECT PLUS-ONE

When my ex-husband invited me to his wedding, I laughed so hard I nearly dropped the invitation.

This was the same man who told me, during our divorce, that I was “too emotional,” “too ordinary,” and “not the kind of woman a successful man should be seen with.”

The same man who left our eight-year marriage for a woman half our friends had never even met. And now he wanted me to sit quietly in the back row while he married her?

Absolutely not. I almost threw the invitation away. Then I noticed the handwritten note at the bottom: “Hope you can come alone. It would mean a lot to me.”

That’s when I understood exactly what he wanted. He wanted to see me lonely. Awkward. Heartbroken. While everyone whispered about how he’d “upgraded.”

So I did the only reasonable thing I could think of. I hired an actor to be my plus-one.

His name was Adrian. Handsome. Calm. So convincing I nearly forgot we’d met three days earlier.

We walked in arm in arm. Guests turned to stare. My ex’s family went silent.

Then he saw us from across the room. His face went completely white.

At first, I thought it was just because I hadn’t shown up miserable and alone.

Then Adrian’s hand tightened around mine. He leaned down, still smiling for the cameras, and whispered something that made my stomach drop straight through the floor.
