I stood up, pacing across the hardwood floor of the living room as fifty-five years of grief suddenly recontextualized into a calculated lie.
“Why would she do that?” I demanded, tears streaming freely down my face. “She knew you were the only man I ever loved!”
Daniel untied the silk ribbon around the letters, pulling out an old ledger page signed by Evelyn herself from five decades prior.
“She didn’t want you to leave the family estate,” Daniel explained softly, handing me the document. “If you married me—a penniless soldier—our father’s trust would have been split equally.”
“By convincing you I was dead and keeping you unmarried at home, she ensured she controlled the entirety of the family business and fortune,” he added.
I stared at the signature on the paper, realizing my own sister had sacrificed my lifelong happiness for financial control and greed.
