PART 2: THE BETRAYAL AT HOME

“Who hid the letters, Daniel?” I whispered, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the armrest of my armchair.

Daniel reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a stack of yellowed, ribbon-tied envelopes, all stamped with foreign postmarks from fifty years ago.

“Every single one came back returned or diverted,” Daniel said, his voice cracking with decades of stored pain. “Your sister, Evelyn.”

The air left my lungs instantly as my mind raced through half a century of memories with my older sister, the woman who had wiped my tears every time I wept for Daniel.

“Evelyn?” I stammered, feeling sick to my stomach. “She… she helped me look for you. She held me when I cried!”

“She told me you moved to Europe and married a wealthy businessman,” Daniel revealed, looking up with eyes filled with old sorrow. “She told me never to contact you again.”
