The room went silent as Eve Mercer stood there, clutching the ruined silk against her body, trying to hide the humiliation that had just been forced onto her.
Some guests looked away, some raised their phones, and some quietly smiled because they had already decided who mattered: a wealthy socialite in diamonds, or the woman carrying their drinks.

Then the chair at the head table moved slowly. Everyone turned as the guest of honor stood up—Sebastian Vale, the billionaire investor whose name alone could change the future of the foundation.
He removed his tuxedo jacket and, without saying a single word, walked directly toward Eve.
The laughter disappeared, the cameras lowered, and even Celeste’s confident expression began to crack.
Because Sebastian didn’t look at Eve like she was an employee; he looked at her like she was the most important person in the room.
He placed his jacket around her shoulders, covered the torn dress, and quietly asked: “Did she hurt you?”
Eve tried to say no, but Sebastian saw the truth: the red marks, the fear, and the sheer humiliation.
When he turned back toward Celeste, the entire ballroom felt the shift in power.
Celeste quickly tried to explain, “It was just a misunderstanding.”
Sebastian looked at the torn silk still trapped in her hand, looked directly into her eyes, and said: “You put your hands on my wife.”
The woman everyone thought was just a waitress was the woman who owned half the reason they were gathered there—and Celeste had just made the biggest mistake of her life.
