PART 4: The Reckoning
Eleanor stood at the top of the wooden stairs, a heavy brass candleholder clutched in her hand. Her tears were gone, replaced by a cold, calculating glare that shattered every illusion I had ever held about her.
“I built this family,” Eleanor hissed, stepping down slowly into the cellar. “I protected you from your weak father, David. And I won’t let a stray girl and a ghost ruin what is mine.”
“It was never yours, Eleanor,” Margaret said, standing tall despite her cane. “And the police are already on their way. Emily called them before she unlocked the panel.”
The sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing down the quiet street. Eleanor looked at me, expecting me to step in front of her as I had done a hundred times before.
“David,” she commanded, her voice dropping into that familiar manipulative tone. “Tell them your aunt is insane. Tell them your wife is lying.”
I looked at the silver ring lying in Emily’s palm, then at the positive test, and finally at the woman who had spent my entire life turning me into her weapon.
“No,” I said, stepping beside Emily and taking her hand—though she did not squeeze back. “It’s over, Mom.”
