Margaret explained how Eleanor had systematically isolated her decades ago, driving her away to claim the entire family estate for herself. The storage room tunnel wasn’t a secret escape—it was how Margaret had survived and secretly fled the house the night Eleanor tried to have her committed.
“This house doesn’t belong to your mother, David,” Emily said, her voice shaking with quiet rage as she held up a faded leather folder. “Margaret gave me the original deed and the trust documents weeks ago when I realized your mother was poisoning my food.”
The truth hit me like a physical blow. The sudden fatigue, the constant nausea Emily had suffered over the past month—it wasn’t just early pregnancy.
“The tea,” I whispered, the memory of last night flashing through my mind. “My mother gave me tea right before I passed out…”
“She was giving it to Emily for weeks in small doses,” Margaret said coldly. “To make sure she lost the baby. But Emily stopped drinking anything Eleanor touched.”
