Eleanor fell to her knees right in front of the quadruplets, completely unbothered by the cold floor.
“Eight years…” Eleanor wept, reaching out a hesitant hand toward Olivia, who gently offered her a small gingerbread cookie from her coat pocket. “I missed eight years of their lives because my son was a coward.”
Eleanor turned her gaze toward Daniel, her eyes ablaze with a cold fury he had clearly never seen before.
“Every check I wrote to ‘help you start fresh’ after your divorce… you told me she refused child support,” Eleanor said, standing up to face her son. “You kept every cent for yourself, didn’t you?”
Daniel shrank under the stares of his aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered around the dining table. The golden-boy image he had carefully maintained for nearly a decade dissolved in a single morning.
