The blonde woman beside Daniel, whose name was Claire, stared at the velvet ring box that had fallen onto the floor. She looked at Daniel, then at the four eight-year-olds standing in tailored winter coats.
“You told me you didn’t have children,” Claire said, her tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “You told me your ex-wife was crazy and made up a pregnancy to trap you.”
“Claire, listen to me—” Daniel reached for her hand, but she whipped her arm away.
“Eight years, Daniel?” Claire asked, her eyes wide with disgust. “You abandoned four babies? And you brought her here today thinking you were going to show off your life while she suffered alone?”
I stood quietly near the entrance, wrapping my arms around Sophia and Olivia. I didn’t need to shout or make a scene. The truth, exposed in front of his entire extended family, was doing all the work for me.
