I scrambled behind a heavy canvas partition just as the headlights of Brian’s SUV swept across the polished concrete floor. The engine cut out, and the sound of his heavy footsteps echoed in the quiet space.
“Delphine?” Brian called out, his voice sharp with immediate tension. “Why is the inner door unlocked?”
I held my breath, pressing my back flat against the wooden frame as he walked past my hiding spot toward his workbench. He pulled a black velvet bag from his coat pocket, carefully setting a freshly acquired antique medallion onto the table.
He believed I was miles away at a friend’s house, still navigating the world with a white cane and dependent on his guidance for every step.
