Grandpa’s hands shook so violently that the old parchment nearly tore as he pulled it from the envelope. Sitting beside him in my wheelchair, I caught a glimpse of the faded black-and-white photograph inside.
It was a picture of my grandfather thirty years younger, standing in front of an old auto repair shop alongside a tough-looking young man with a crooked smile.
“You left town the night the shop went under!” the biker barked, his voice booming over the noisy flea market crowd. “My dad spent his entire life savings trying to pay off the debts you ran away from!”
People at neighboring tables turned to stare as Grandpa clutched his chest, his eyes filled with overwhelming shame. The kind, gentle man who had stayed up until 3:00 AM every night sewing blankets for my medical treatment seemed to shrink right in front of me.
“Marcus, please… you don’t understand what happened that night,” Grandpa choked out, his voice barely a whisper.
