“I understand enough!” Marcus snapped, taking a step closer to our table. “You vanished into thin air, and my father died thinking his best friend had betrayed him!”

“I didn’t steal a single dime, Marcus!” Grandpa said, tears finally welling in his aged eyes. “Your father had a gambling addiction that threatened to ruin both our families! I took the entire debt under my own name so the bank wouldn’t take your family home!”

Grandpa reached into his worn leather satchel, pulling out a yellowed bank ledger he had kept buried for decades. He slid it across the wooden folding table toward Marcus.

“I left town to work three jobs under the table just to pay off the collectors,” Grandpa confessed, his head bowing low. “Every dollar I earned for twenty years went straight to that bank so your mother could keep her house.”
