PART 2: THE UNANNOUNCED AUDIT
Austin’s mother stepped closer to my bed, clicking her tongue in disgust as she surveyed my bandages. “Look at you, making a scene over a minor scrape while my son works himself to the bone as a top executive!”
Before I could answer, Austin’s phone began ringing frantically in his pocket. He glanced at the caller ID, and his smug smile instantly evaporated.
“It’s corporate headquarters,” Austin muttered, his face going pale as he answered the call on speaker. “This is Director Parker.”
“Austin Parker, this is Jonathan Vance, Chief Legal Counsel for the Board of Directors,” a stern voice boomed through the speaker. “A emergency forensic audit is currently underway at your regional branch.”
Austin stiffened, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his phone. “An audit? On whose authority? I report directly to the Vice President!”
“You report to the Chairwoman,” Vance corrected coldly. “And she has personally flagged six offshore vendor accounts under your management for immediate fraud inspection.”
My mother-in-law gasped, looking back and forth between her panicked son and my calm expression. “Austin, what is this man talking about? Tell him who you are!”
“Shut up, Mom!” Austin snapped, sweat breaking out across his forehead as he realized the magnitude of what was happening.
“We have already seized your office computer and frozen all executive accounts associated with Apex Logistics,” Vance continued mercilessly. “Preliminary findings indicate over $2.4 million in embezzled corporate funds.”
Austin collapsed onto the plastic visitor’s chair beside my bed, his knees buckling under the sudden weight of his unraveling lies.
