PART 2: THE CRUMBLING LIES
I slammed my foot on the brakes, sending gravel spraying across the shoulder of the road.
My heart thundered against my ribs as I threw the truck door open, barely hearing my fiancée yelling at me to stay in the vehicle.
I stumbled toward Nadine, my gaze locked onto the two tiny infants sleeping soundly against her worn, faded coat.
Nadine froze, her pale face draining of what little color it had left as she recognized my shadow blocking the afternoon sun.
“Terrence,” she whispered, her voice raspy and frail, instinctively pulling her coat tighter around the babies to shield them from me.
“They’re… they’re mine?” I choked out, my knees trembling so violently I could barely stand on the uneven dirt.
She didn’t answer with words; she simply looked up into my eyes with a gaze full of profound, agonizing heartbreak.
