Every woman my widowed father dated vanished overnight — so I asked my friend to go on one date with him.
My father lost my mother twelve years ago. For a long time, he refused to date anyone. Kept her side of the closet exactly as she’d left it.
Then, almost overnight, everything changed. He joined a dating app. Started meeting wonderful women. But none of them ever stayed.
The date would go perfectly. They’d make plans to see each other again. Then by the next morning, the woman had disappeared. No calls. No texts. Nothing.
My father was heartbroken every single time. “I don’t understand,” he kept saying. “They all seemed so happy.”
After the sixth woman vanished, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Something wasn’t right. So I asked my best friend, Camille, for a favor. “Go on one date with him.”
She laughed. “You’ve got to be kidding.” Reluctantly, she agreed.
The date went even better than I expected. Camille called me right after, practically giddy. “Your dad is wonderful,” she said. “I can’t believe nobody gave him a real chance.”
The next morning… she disappeared too. Straight to voicemail. By evening, she finally texted me back. “Don’t contact me. Please.”
That wasn’t Camille. I’ve known that woman since the fourth grade. She doesn’t talk like that. I drove straight to her apartment. Her car was there. Her lights were on. Nobody answered the door.
The next afternoon she finally called, her voice shaking. “I can’t explain this over the phone.”
The next morning, I caught her outside her office before she went in. “What happened? What did my father do?”
She pulled out her phone with trembling hands and showed me something that made my whole body go cold.
