THE UNFORGIVABLE MISTAKE

My name is Terrence. The worst mistake of my life started the day I stopped listening to the woman I loved.

My stepfather handed me a folder. Photos. Bank statements. Texts from a man named “D.” He said, “I love you like my own son. I wasn’t about to let you keep sleeping next to a woman who’s been lying to your face.”

I believed every page. That same night, I told my wife Nadine to pack her things. “I didn’t do this,” she said. “You’re going to find that out one day.”

I didn’t listen. She was gone within two months. No fight. No lawyer. Just silence.

A year later, I was engaged to someone new, driving out past the county line, when my fiancée suddenly screamed for me to pull over.

There, on the side of a dusty road, stood Nadine. Worn clothes. A bag of crushed cans in her hand.

And strapped against her chest — two babies. Twins. Even from inside the truck, I could see it. My eyes. My hair.
