PART 3: THE DECK AND THE DIFFERENCE
Brooke’s eyes darted frantically toward the backyard glass doors as the rhythmic, booming sound of Walter’s hammering echoed loudly through the kitchen walls.
“Why is Walter building a deck out there right now?” she screamed, trying desperately to shift the focus away from the financial records in Ethan’s hands. “Who authorized this? Who is paying for this construction?”
“I am,” Ethan replied coldly, pulling a signed contract from his coat pocket. “I approved the project last night. Walter offered us a family discount on the labor, and it’s being funded directly from my personal savings account.”
He pointed directly to my itemized invoice resting on the granite counter. “And after deducting the two thousand dollars you absurdly claimed she owed you for staying here, we still legally owe my mother twelve hundred and twelve dollars for her hard work.”
Brooke gasped, her lips trembling as she realized her greedy scheme had backfired directly into her own pocketbook and exposed her true nature to her husband.
“You can’t be serious!” she yelled, her eyes welling with tears of frustration. “She’s family! You don’t pay family for cooking a few simple meals and watching her own grandchildren!”
Ethan looked at her with a heavy, profound sense of disappointment that cut deeper than any raised voice ever could. “Then why did you hand her an itemized bill the moment she sat down for coffee yesterday?”
Brooke stood completely frozen, unable to formulate a single logical excuse as Ethan reached into his pocket for his checkbook.
The humiliation washed over her face in waves as she watched her husband open the ledger, write out the exact remaining balance, and blow gently on the wet ink.
