My four-year-old daughter kept pointing behind my boss’s ear and crying, “Mommy, Daddy’s there!”
I tried to calm her down. Her father had passed away a year earlier, and there was absolutely no possible way she could be seeing him at my boss’s pool party.
But the moment Sophie said those words, my boss went completely pale. He quickly put her down… then walked away without looking at me.
At first, I told myself Sophie was simply confused. She was only four, and she still talked about her father constantly.
Sometimes she claimed she saw him in photographs, passing cars, or strangers who happened to resemble him. So I tried not to think about my boss’s reaction.
Then, a few minutes later, I saw him standing near the pool with his back turned toward me. Something behind his ear caught the sunlight—a tiny silver object.
I stepped closer, and my stomach dropped because suddenly, I understood exactly what my daughter had been trying to show me.
Behind his right ear was a small metal implant with a distinctive crescent-shaped scar beneath it. I knew that scar; I had kissed it hundreds of times.
My husband had received the exact same implant after an accident years earlier. According to his doctors, it had been custom-made specifically for him.
Sophie appeared beside me again and pointed. “See, Mommy?”
My boss slowly turned around. The instant he realized what I was staring at, his hand flew toward his ear. Too late—I had already seen it.
And there was only one question running through my mind: How could something that had belonged to my supposedly dead husband possibly be attached to my boss?
