PART 2: THE RECOVERED MEMORY

I stood frozen beside the shimmering pool, the cheerful chatter of my coworkers fading into deafening background noise.

My boss, Richard, tried to force a relaxed smile, but the sudden tremor in his hands betrayed his deep panic.

“Is everything alright, Clara?” he asked, taking a subtle step backward as if trying to hide the right side of his face.

“Where did you get that implant, Richard?” I demanded, my voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rising rage. “That design was custom-built for David after his motor vehicle accident.”

Richard swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the front gates of his estate as if searching for an immediate escape route.

“You’re just overwhelmed, Clara,” he stammered defensively. “It’s a standard neurological receiver for my hearing condition. Thousands of people have them.”

“Not with a crescent surgical scar directly beneath the titanium casing,” I countered, pulling my phone out to search through my archived medical files.

Before I could open the documents, Richard’s cell phone rang, displaying an encrypted private caller ID that made his jaw lock in pure terror.
