PART 2: THE TALLY OF DEBTS
Brooke stared down at the crisp white paper lying beside her steaming mug, her face rapidly shifting from arrogant outrage to absolute, stunned confusion.
Ethan stepped into the kitchen through the side door, his forehead creased with deep exhaustion from his early flight, but his eyes were sharp, cold, and fixed entirely on his wife.
“What is the meaning of all these workers in our backyard?” Brooke demanded, turning her anger toward Ethan in a desperate attempt to gain control. “And why is your mother standing here with all her suitcases packed?”

“Mom isn’t a guest who owed you rent, Brooke,” Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet and steady. “She’s my mother, and you turned her family visit into an unpaid labor sentence while I was out of town.”
The silence in the kitchen grew suffocating as Brooke realized Ethan wasn’t taking her side. Her jaw tightened, and she searched for something—anything—to turn the narrative back in her favor.
“I gave her a place to stay!” Brooke snapped, her voice rising an octave. “She would have paid for a hotel if she stayed anywhere else in town!”
“She came here to see her grandchildren,” Ethan replied, stepping between Brooke and me. “And instead of letting her be a grandmother, you treated her like hired help you had no intention of paying.”
