PART 3: THE HEARTBREAKING TRUTH
Ben shuffled back out into the room, looking at me with those familiar, gentle eyes that had comforted me since childhood.
“Ben,” I whispered, unable to hold the facade any longer as tears streamed down my face. “Why is there an experimental trial folder under your bed?”
His smile faded, replaced by a look of profound vulnerability as he slowly rested his back against the pillows.
“Because the side effects are brutal, sweetheart,” he confessed softly, his voice trembling. “There was a seventy percent chance the trial would fail, and I didn’t want to give you false hope.”
He explained that he didn’t want our wedding day to be about medical statistics or desperate gambles; he wanted it to be about pure, unconditional love.
He and his oncologist had agreed to start the experimental infusion the very next morning, keeping it quiet so I wouldn’t spend our wedding night in terror.
“I fought to stay alive for you,” Ben whispered, reaching out to wipe a runaway tear from my cheek. “I just needed you to be my wife first.”
