PART 2: THE FADED PHOTOGRAPH

Albert slowly reached inside his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather wallet.

With hands that trembled slightly, he unfolded a black-and-white photograph that was creased along the edges from decades of handling.

He passed the photo to me, his thumbs gently brushing my fingers as I took it into my hands.

The image showed a young nurse in uniform standing in a sunlit garden, smiling brightly toward the camera.

I gasped, my breath catching in my throat as I stared at the unmistakable features in the portrait.

The young woman in the decades-old photograph possessed my exact smile, my jawline, and the same distinct eyes.
