THE SECRET AT Wednesday’s TABLE

A few months after my husband suddenly passed away from a heart attack, I started volunteering at a retirement home.

People assumed I was there because I wanted to bring comfort to lonely seniors, and maybe that was part of the reason.

But the truth was much harder to admit: I was the lonely one.

Every night, I walked back into a quiet house where no one asked how my day was. No one laughed from the kitchen, and no one was waiting for me.

The silence had become heavier than the grief itself.

Then I met Albert. He was 89 years old, but his mind was sharper than most people half his age.

He had a way of making an entire room smile with just a story and a sarcastic joke.

Every Wednesday, we sat together over a cup of tea, a chessboard between us, and hours of stories about the life he had lived.

He told me about the places he’d traveled, the people he’d lost, and the memories he still carried after all those years.

Somehow, without realizing it, Albert became the person I looked forward to seeing most.

One afternoon, while we were laughing over a chess game, I teased him. “Albert, after everything you’ve been through… would you ever get married again?”

He looked at me with that familiar mischievous smile, then straightened his jacket like he was preparing for a serious announcement.

“Well,” he said, laughing, “I’m only 89. Don’t rush me. You never know what life has planned.” We both laughed. I thought it was just another funny moment between friends.

I never imagined those words would come back to me one week later.

The following Wednesday, everything felt normal. We played chess, drank tea, and laughed.

Until the moment Albert slowly pushed himself up from his chair. The room changed instantly as people stopped talking, nurses turned around, and residents watched in silence.

This elderly man carefully reached inside his jacket pocket. A few people rushed toward him, worried he might fall, but Albert refused their help.

And then, in front of everyone, he lowered himself onto one knee. The entire retirement home went completely silent, every eye fixed on us.

I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak.

Then Albert looked up at me with a serious expression I had never seen before and asked, “Will you marry me?”

For a second, I honestly thought it was another one of his jokes. I laughed nervously and reached down to help him stand.

But Albert gently held my hand and stopped me. The smile disappeared from his face, and his eyes became filled with emotion.

Then he whispered something that made my heart stop. “There’s a reason I chose you.”

He looked around the room, then back at me. “And when you hear the truth… you’ll understand why I had to ask you.”

I thought I knew Albert’s story and why he spent every Wednesday sitting beside me, but the secret he was about to reveal was something I never saw coming…
