PART 2: THE UNOPENED LETTER
June’s voice echoed across the crowded auditorium as she began reading the faded, yellowed note that my brother had left behind all those years ago.
“Noah, I know you’re reading this,” June quoted, her voice trembling slightly under the weight of the moment. “I didn’t run away because I was scared of being a father.”
A collective hush fell over the entire audience as hundreds of people leaned forward, captivated by the raw emotion spilling from the stage.
“I ran away because I was running from the debts that would have destroyed these girls before they ever had a chance to live,” June continued reading.
My hands trembled violently as I rested on the cold floor, unable to process how my nieces had found the original letter I thought I had buried deep in my closet decades ago.
Claire stepped forward, taking the microphone from her sister with tears glistening in her eyes.
