PART 2: THE BANKRUPT REALITY
Back in my home town, Brent was standing in the kitchen staring at his banking app in total disbelief. The mortgage payment had bounced, and the utility company had just issued a final disconnection notice.
My mother sat at the dining table, her hands shaking as she tried to call my old number for the twentieth time, only to be met with a cold automated disconnect tone.
“She didn’t transfer the money, Brent,” my mother panicked, her voice cracking as the reality set in. “The house payment is due today, and we don’t have enough to cover even a fraction of it!”
Brent’s arrogant posture vanished instantly, replaced by a pale look of absolute dread as he realized his entire lifestyle was built on a foundation he had just destroyed.
He spent the next three hours driving around town, visiting my old office and checking with my former friends, desperately searching for any clue to where I had vanished.
When my former boss coldly informed him that I had resigned and taken an executive position overseas, Brent felt his stomach drop into a bottomless pit.
He realized too late that I hadn’t just moved out of the house; I had completely excised them from my life, taking my financial lifeline with me.
