THE SECRET IN THE COAT

For months, Daniel had an excuse ready whenever I reached for him. He was tired. Work was stressful. His back hurt. He needed space.

At first, I tried to be understanding. Then I started wondering whether the problem was me.

But that Friday night, while searching his coat for the car keys, my fingers brushed against a small bottle tucked deep inside the inner pocket. The label made my stomach drop.

The prescription had been filled three months earlier, and nearly half the pills were gone. I stood there staring at the bottle, trying to make the dates make sense. Daniel had barely looked at me during those three months—let alone touched me.

Then I noticed something even stranger. His brother, Marcus, traveled often for work. Every date marked on the pharmacy receipt matched one of Marcus’s trips out of town.

And Marcus had just left again that morning.

When Daniel came downstairs dressed in a shirt I hadn’t seen him wear in years, he froze the moment he saw the bottle in my hand. For one long second, neither of us spoke.

Then his phone lit up on the counter. A message appeared from a contact saved under a single letter: “He’s gone. Same place as always?”

Daniel lunged for the phone, but I grabbed it first. And when I opened the conversation, the first photo on the screen wasn’t of another woman—it was someone I knew far too well.
