“So, my dear,” Walter whispered, leaning close as the guests began to murmur among themselves. “Will you stand by me in poverty, just as you promised?”
I pulled my hands away from his, the anger inside me boiling over in front of the entire audience.
“Is this some kind of sick joke?” I shouted, dropping my bouquet to the floor. “You lied to me from the very beginning!”
Suddenly, an elderly man in a sharp tuxedo stood up from the front row and cleared his throat, holding a thick leather folder.
“Actually, Mr. Bennett, the test is over,” the man announced, stepping up to the altar with a stern expression.
He introduced himself as the executor of Walter’s actual family trust—a multi-million-dollar fund that had strict character conditions attached to it.
The lawyer looked at Walter and then turned to me, revealing a clause that neither of us had anticipated.
