PART 3: LEAVING THE SHADOWS
The restaurant staff watched in stunned silence as Margaret stood up, firmly holding both of her sons’ hands in her own.
She left a stack of hundred-dollar bills on the table to cover her meal, without waiting for change or caring about the stares of the wealthy patrons.
Outside, the cool Seattle rain was beginning to fall, but Margaret wrapped her expensive cashmere coat around little Eli to keep him dry.
She guided them to her parked sedan, opening the door and making sure they were warm and safe inside before stepping into the driver’s seat.
As she drove toward her home, Noah quietly explained how their father had fallen ill months ago, leaving them with nothing but memories and the silver locket.
“We walked into that restaurant tonight just hoping for a piece of bread,” Eli murmured softly from the backseat, curling up against his brother.
Margaret looked at them through the rearview mirror, her heart overflowing with a protective love she thought she had lost forever.
