The heavy mahogany doors groaned on their hinges as a tall figure framed by the hallway lights stepped smoothly into the grand ballroom.
Gasps echoed across the room as my stepmother, Evelyn, dropped her crystal champagne glass, letting it shatter into a hundred sharp pieces across the polished floor.
Standing in the entryway was Judge Arthur Vance—my father’s closest confidant and the chief trustee of the foundation who had reportedly gone missing shortly after the funeral.
Evelyn’s face drained of all color, her hands trembling as she tried to signal security to intercept him before he reached the main podium.
“Release Scarlett immediately,” Judge Vance’s voice cut through the stunned silence like a blade, backed by two federal marshals standing directly behind him.
The security guards hesitated, instantly loosening their grip on my arms as the authority in his tone commanded the entire room.
