HE HIDDEN SCARS

Since he fell ill, the house has changed. Not all at once, not with a bang, but bit by bit—as if something were slowly fading away without anyone ever naming it.

It became routine. Silence. A heavy weight. My mother-in-law stopped talking so much, and my husband started spending more time away—always on the road, always with a different excuse.

And I stayed. Married for three years, holding together a house that seemed to be crumbling in slow motion. Taking care of everything, taking care of my brother-in-law. A man who was once strong, and now depended on me for everything.

Food, medicine, clothes, every day the same, every day heavier. But I never complained because I cared for him, and because in his silence, there was something that always unsettled me.

He was reserved, serious, the kind who observes more than he speaks. But with me, it was different—softer, more attentive, as if he wanted to say something but never could.

My husband always repeated the same thing before leaving: “Don’t go into my brother’s room too much. Call Mom if you need anything.” He didn’t say it as advice; he said it as a warning.

Until that day. The rain was falling hard over Guadalajara, the house was empty, and it was just the two of us. When it came time to bathe him, he tensed up and whispered, “Better tomorrow… not today.”

I insisted gently, and he finally yielded. I prepared the warm water, towels, and chair on the covered patio while the air smelled of soap and dampness.

I began to unbutton his shirt. One, then another, until he whispered, “No…” He closed his eyes, making me hesitate, but the last button came undone and the fabric fell away.

When I removed the shirt, everything inside me went still. They were marks—ancient, deep scars crossing his back as if someone had tried to erase something without succeeding.

My husband’s voice echoed in my mind: “Don’t go in…” My brother-in-law kept his eyes closed, as if knowing the truth was finally exposed. In that house, not everything was an illness; there was a dangerous secret hidden for years.
