PART 2: THE UNSPOKEN TRUTH
My hands trembled as my fingers lightly hovered over the jagged, pale lines tracing across his spine. The rain continued to drum against the metal roof of the patio, filling the suffocating silence between us.
“Who did this to you?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the storm. For the first time in months, my brother-in-law opened his eyes and looked directly at me, his gaze brimming with years of suppressed pain.
“It wasn’t an accident that put me in this wheelchair, Mateo,” he whispered, his vocal cords straining from disuse. “And it wasn’t a sudden illness either.”
He revealed that three years ago—just weeks before my wedding—he had discovered my husband was running a dangerous, illegal operation using the family business as a cover. When he threatened to go to the authorities, a violent confrontation broke out behind the warehouse.
My husband and his mother had covered up the assault, staging a tragic hit-and-run accident and keeping him isolated in that room under the guise of medical care to ensure he would never speak to anyone outside the family.
