PART 2: COMMAND AND CONTROL

“Major General Vance reporting, Lieutenant Colonel,” the officer said, his voice ringing crisp and clear across the frost-covered driveway.

Julian froze with his Audi keys dangling uselessly from his hand, his mouth open in complete disbelief.

My mother dropped her coffee mug onto the porch steps, where it shattered, splashing dark liquid over her slippers.

Harper clutched her silk robe tight around her neck, looking back and forth between the armed escort and the box sitting at my feet.

“Ma’am, your temporary medical leave is officially concluded,” General Vance continued, maintaining his rigid posture. “The Pentagon has cleared your personal security detail, and your transport is ready.”

I looked past the General toward my father, who was stepping onto the porch with a face completely drained of color.

“What is the meaning of this?” my father stammered, trying to muster his usual authoritative tone. “She’s just a clerk! You have no right to trespass on my property!”

General Vance turned slowly, giving my father a cold, lethal stare that made the older man instantly swallow his words.

“This property was purchased solely by Major David Vance,” the General corrected firmly. “And as of zero-eight-hundred hours, it is officially classified as a secure military residence under the sole ownership of his widow.”
