PART 3: THE DINNER OF RECKONING

On a Sunday evening, Carmen invited her extended relatives over for a formal family dinner, eager to show off her control over the household and issue another round of subtle insults toward my background.

As everyone sat at the long dining table, Carmen sneered at the modest dish I had prepared, remarking loudly about “cheap rural tastes” in front of all six guests.

Marco cleared his throat awkwardly, once again lowering his head in silent cowardice rather than defending the mother of his child.

I calmly wiped my mouth with a napkin, stood up from the table, and retrieved the thick manila envelope from my bedroom drawer, laying it flat in the middle of the dining room table.

“Since this house means so much to your family’s pride, Carmen, I think you should read the updated ownership records,” I said, my voice cutting through the room with absolute composure.

Carmen snorted in disgust and opened the packet, but as her eyes scanned the official notary seal listing me as the sole owner of the residence, the color drained entirely from her face.
