For three weeks, I acted as if I had accepted my place in Carmen’s household, quietly submitting to every petty comment without uttering a word of complaint.
What Carmen and Marco didn’t know was that I was spending every evening reviewing land titles, bank statements, and legal deeds that had belonged to my family in Puebla for generations.
My father had quietly invested decades of crop earnings into purchasing commercial plots along the main highway near our hometown, lands that had recently skyrocketed in value due to new government infrastructure projects.
Without telling Marco, I met with an attorney in the center of Mexico City and authorized the immediate sale of two small parcels, securing a staggering sum of capital in a personal account.
The following morning, I bought the very lease on the house Carmen proudly called her family home, purchasing the property outright from her distant landlord who was desperate to liquidate.
When the legal documents arrived at the front door bearing my name as the sole proprietor, I placed them inside a locked drawer in my bedroom, waiting for the right moment.
