THE UNINVITED GIFT

The living room glowed with hundreds of blue and white balloons floating on the ceiling. The soft music of the violin failed to cover up the murmurs of the fifty etiquette-dressed guests.

In the center of the improvised stage, Julian held Clara’s waist with a perfect smile. Clara, dressed in an elegant pastel pink dress, caressed her prominent pregnant belly. She believed this baby shower would be the event of the year in the circles of high society.

But she didn’t count on the main door of the party hall to open in pairs. The air in the room seemed to freeze in an instant. Valeria crossed the threshold walking with a serene and overwhelming elegance. She wore a dark green velvet dress that strongly highlighted her own pregnant belly.

The crowd stood in utter silence as murmurs of amazement began to spread. “What’s she doing here?” whispered one of the cousins in the background, immediately taking out her cell phone.

Julian turned pale instantly and the champagne glass almost slipped out of his left hand. “Valeria… you’re not invited to this party,” Julian said, trying to keep a firm tone.

“Such an expensive party couldn’t stay without my presence, dear Julian,” she replied with cold serenity.

“Please get out of here right now, you’re ruining my special moment,” screamed Clara, adjusting her hair.

“I didn’t come to fight, Clara. I just came to personally deliver the baby welcome gift,” Valeria said.

Valeria held in her hands a beautiful blue box decorated with an impeccable satin ribbon. All the attention in the room was immediately focused on the intruder’s padded hands.

“We don’t need anything coming from you, leave before I call security,” threatened Julian by stepping up.

“Open the box, Julian. I assure you this gift changes absolutely everything in this room,” Valeria insisted without blinking an eye.

Guests began lifting up their smartphones to stream the scene live. Clara looked at Julian with doubt and greed, unable to contain her overflowing curiosity.

“Let me see it, Julian. Don’t let her think she intimidates us in front of everyone,” said Clara, grabbing the box. “Don’t do it, Clara, this is a trap,” Julian warned in a trembling voice.

But Clara was already removing the blue tape with anxious, impatient fingers. Valeria went back two steps and crossed her arms over her chest with a slight smile on her lips.

The box lid fell to the marble floor, generating a dry echo throughout the enclosure. Inside the box there were no baby clothes, no toys, no wool shoes. There was a thick pile of documents printed on official paper with notarial and laboratory stamps.

Clara frowned in a strange expression and grabbed the first leaf of the packet with shaky hands. Julian quickly approached Clara’s back to read over her shoulder.

As her eyes traversed the first lines of the document, Clara’s face lost all its color. Clara’s mouth opened in a gesture of panic and utter shock.

Julian’s eyes went completely blurred as the page between his fingers began to vibrate in rage. The silence in the great hall was so intense that it could be cut with a knife.

“This can’t be true! Tell me this is a damn lie!” screamed Clara, losing her sanity.

“You tricked me! All this time you were playing me!” Julian roared, looking at Clara angrily.

“Me? You’re the conman who destroyed my life and my family’s!” Clara answered, crying uncontrollably.

The phone cameras recorded every second of the disaster in HD. Valeria didn’t say a single more word; she simply watched her perfectly executed plan come to fruition.

The guests began to gasp in horror as they heard the secrets come to light on stage. The secrets revealed in those sheets didn’t just destroy Julian and Clara’s marriage.

They also exposed a web of lies, million-dollar frauds, and devastating biological evidence. Tension reached a tipping point when Clara’s father walked frantically towards the stage.
