PART 2: THE UNOPENED LETTER
The lawyer pulled out a chair for me, but my legs felt too numb to move as I gripped the heavy wooden box against my chest.
My mind reeled as I tried to connect the gentle, dying man I had comforted with the calculating figure the lawyer described.
“He was never a stranger to you,” the attorney explained softly, his stern voice softening slightly as he saw the color drain from my face.
With trembling fingers, I lifted the brass latch on the front of the box and slowly raised the lid.
Inside lay a collection of yellowed photographs, a silver heart-shaped locket, and a thick envelope with my name written in Nathan’s unmistakable handwriting.
I opened the top photo, my breath catching in my throat as I saw my young mother smiling radiantly next to a young Nathan holding a newborn baby wrapped in pink.
