Audrey’s hands trembled as she smoothed out the crumpled documents across the dining room table. The receipts did not show living expenses, medical bills, or birthday gifts.

Instead, every single transaction was wired directly into a private brokerage account under Grant’s exclusive name. Lenora hadn’t taken a single penny for her own livelihood.

The monthly three hundred dollars, the holiday bonus money, and even the funds meant for Lenora’s care had been funneled straight into high-risk stock investments. Grant and his mother had manufactured an elaborate scheme of guilt and obligation simply to extract cash from Audrey’s hard-earned salary.

A key document tucked at the very back of the folder made Audrey’s stomach drop even further. It was a pre-drafted divorce petition, stamped by a local family law attorney, dated two weeks before their wedding.

They had planned to drain her finances from the very beginning, intending to file for divorce the moment her personal savings were completely exhausted.
