PART 4: Standing Tall

I threw off the gray blanket covering my legs.

Before the eyes of two hundred guests, my fiancée, and my traitorous relatives, I planted my feet firmly on the polished marble floor and stood up to my full height.

A massive collective gasp shattered the quiet room. Vanessa stumbled backward, her hand flying over her mouth in absolute terror.

“Your… your legs,” she stammered, her voice shaking violently. “The doctors said…”

“The doctors answered to me,” I said, stepping away from the wheelchair and looking down at her. “I needed to see who was standing beside me because they loved me, and who was waiting for me to fall so they could pick my pockets.”

I turned my gaze toward Uncle Martin and my former friend Daniel, both of whom were looking for the nearest exit.

“Security,” I called out calmly.

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom burst open, and my head of security entered alongside four uniformed police officers.
